Shabby Chippy Chair

See my Country Farm Shabby Chippy Chair?

It’s what I’ve been working on this week.

Found this baby at Goodwill for $3.99.

004

DON’T HAVE A BEFORE PIC… THIS IS AFTER STRIPPING.

It WAS  totally painted white BUT the paint was really gunky and chunky (multiple layers)…

so I have been stripping it.

Only to… yes…  repaint it white.

Have you ever stripped paint off of spindles??

008blog

It’s kinda hard!

009blog

Anyway… still working on it but making lots of progress.

It must have had some red paint and orange paint at one time… but it’s only in certain places… not all over.

It will definitely need Kilz.

010blog

What’s funny is that… I kind of like the way looks at this point.

007

My plan was to paint it white again…

but I kinda like this soft washed look it’s taking on with the chippy paint.

Is that crazy?

(OK… don’t answer that!)

005

My instinct is to keep working with it to create an even more shabby chippy look.

What do you think I should do?

Just paint it,  leave it or try to make it look more worn and shabby?

Thanks For Stoppin’ By!

  1. Oh me, Oh my, I would leave it like that. It looks really beachy. I love chippy paint things and that was my post for today. Your chair is lovely and looks well loved just the way it is.

  4. Your blog is gorgeous Kendra.....I have to say that I am absolutely loving the chair exactly how it is now. I love the look you created by removing some of the paint layers...I bet stripping the spindles is as bad as sanding...YUCK!!
    Happy day!

  10. Hi Kendra! Just found you through WW, and am loving your blog!

I wouldn't do much more to your chair, to be honest with you. It has such a wonderful beachy, driftwoody look to it now. Maybe a little more whitewash, but being sure to let the wood show through in lots of places.

    Great find!

    Am happily following!

  13. Oh wow I love this chair! When I saw the first photo of it I was immediately in love! Then I read further and found out you might change it. I love the chippyness and the different colors that come thru. I think it adds a lot of character to it! Thanks for sharing and what a great find!

  14. Thanks everyone for your input!! I probably should have stopped stripping it sooner... it looks like the consensus is to leave it! At least I'm not so crazy after all!! :) Thanks for all your opinions... I love hearing and taking them in.

  15. I love the way the chair looks now! It looks like something out of a magazine or Anthropology. You'd pay big $$$ for that chair there! It remindsme of an old chair you'd see in the corner of an old french stone cottage. It's perfect!

  19. Kendra,
I love the way it looks now! It certainly looks beachside/vintage - LOVE IT! Who likes Bix anyway? LOL

My husband took more photos for me of bumble bees (this time) on the same flowers! I think he is starting to like this!! :) Glad you have a hubby that does the same! It is pretty neat to see husbands take photos for us because they know we will be "proud" of them!

Good luck with your chair! Keep up the good work :)

  20. Oh, I just read what Mary Ellen (above) said! I like the idea of a little cushion and even a very short (6 or 8 inches deep) slip cover for the back - with a ruffle???

  21. Enjoy the chair the way it is now. If you get tired of it next week or next year you can always go ahead and paint it then. Then it will be new to you twice!

  23. This morning I had a good long read through your blog. It was good food for my soul. Seeing the verse Jer.29:11 was a great reminder for me, I often forget to read the next 2 verses, which are sooo very important. Thanks for that.

  24. I love the way it looks, stripped down like that. What a great deal you got. I've stripped spindles...once. I was younger and had more ambition then :-)

Wow, I think I'd wet myself if I found something that great at Goodwill!!!

  30. I love it! And I sympathize about stripping all those grooves and ridges. Makes you want some form of lathe to do the turning part for you!
