Shipping Crate Desk

My neighbor called me a couple of weeks ago and gave me this…

A huge shipping crate!  Yesss!

After thinking about it for a few minutes…

I knew exactly what I wanted to do… a computer desk.

We only have one computer desk for two people…and I wanted one of my own.

A custom piece for me… yay!

I was in the middle of working on my Winter Mantel Display when I put everything on hold to work on this.

So… the tearing and ripping apart began!!

 

The crate was way too tall for a desk… so I had to cut it down to size.

Then… it was off to Lowes (only a couple of times) to buy wood for trim and slats.

After cutting the crate down… I reframed each side with a combo of new and left over wood.

I also cut some wood slats to glue inside each frame and then roughly painted the whole thing black.

It got really cold outside so I had to move the operation indoors!

(I don’t have a workshop so the living room, the kitchen and the back porch became the workshop)

Next, I painted the whole thing white/cream and added some moulding.

Finally, I cut a table top from scrap wood and did a decoupage, paper bag, faux leather look to it.  I sealed it with a few coats of Polycrylic.

Here is the final piece…

As for the molding or moulding…

 

I had old canvas frames from my painting days and used two of those on the front of the crate.  I found the corner pieces at Lowes and used them for the bottom corners.… along with shoe molding for the whole thing…

This is what it looks like from the inside… I secured the sides with cut corner pieces.  I may add a shelf in there later.

And this is my black faux leather table top.  I glued and then screwed the top down from the underside.  The top is not perfect… in fact it has a little warpage to it.  BUT… it didn’t cost me anything and I can take a little warpage… especially since I don’t even notice it when I’m using it.

All this building reminded me of the Crate Table I built a couple of years ago!

Now…

Wasn’t sure where I was going to put this desk at first.

 

Yes… we have an office but the hubs likes to sit in there and watch TV while on the computer… as I do, too. 

However…

we don’t always like to watch the same programs.

Therefore… for now… I will put it in the corner of my living room.
